Howdy Games Players!
I’m excited to announce a new innovation in the way I’m running my Café Games “big games day” events!
Starting with September’s Café Games, on Saturday 14th, the event will be split into two sessions.
One of the sessions will run from 5pm-11 and will be just like normal Café Games, six hours to play any kind of game you feel like, whether it’s light “party” style games or long running “euro” strategy games.
But before that, from 12-5 will be a session just for lighter “social and party” games – stuff like Pictionary, Scrabble, Cards and Werewolf and lots of nice short games that keep everyone moving around and social. Those of you who have been with Café Games for a few years will know that the club was founded specifically for this style of gaming.
If you’re equally interested in both kinds of gaming, you’re more than welcome to put your name down for both sessions.
If you’re new and not sure – I highly recommend you start with the first session, so you can get social and meet folks, and then if you feel like it, you can choose to stay for the second session and settle in for some head-to-head strategy.
I know a lot of folks are pretty focused on strategy games and not so keen on the party games – that’s cool, you can come at 5pm and will have heaps of time to play your games.
12pm+: Party and Social Games (click for more details)
5pm+: Both Light & Heavy Games (Party/Social welcome too)
This is an exciting new change, and I hope I can rely on everyone’s support to make it work. I am inviting you to my event like I might invite you to my house, and I expect an equal degree of respect and cooperation.
Please, before 5pm, no “euros”, “thematic ameritrash”, war games, RPGs, etc – I’m sure it’s obvious to seasoned gamers.
In Melbourne we have at least 6 other public boardgames clubs, and they all specialise in playing modern “euro” strategy games. There’s no need for yet another club that’s doing exactly the same thing. I know that many regulars attend events of those other clubs as well, especially “Euro Games At The Royal Standard” which spun off from Café Games a couple of years ago. That’s an excellent place to go if the 6 hours at Café Games is not enough.
I’m making this change for a number of different reasons including resuming our promotion of party games and socialising, and also hopefully alleviating the waiting list issue – I know many people are only interested in one style of gaming or the other.
Also it makes the event more unique – we should all embrace innovation.
I’m glad that you’ve been enjoying Café Games in the past, and I promise that you will also enjoy the new-look Café Games too!
Clarification of “Party & Social Games Session”
Yes, this is a dedicated session for all kinds of party and social games! No euros or strategy games.
If you’re new, I highly recommend you start during this session, so you get to meet a variety of people, in some lighter games, before getting into the long strategic games of the later session.
We’re looking for
• Party games, like Dixit, Pictionary, Telestrations, Taboo, Cranium, Reverse Charades, Billionaire, Perpetual Commotion, Articulate, Anomia, Cards Against Humanity etc
• Word games, like Scrabble, Scattergories, Boggle
• Tile games, like Qwirkle, Rummikub, Dominos,
• Card games, like Uno, 500, Bridge, Canasta
• Dexterity games, like Jenga, Crokinole, Bausack and Foosball
• and of course the Psychological/Negotiation games like Werewolf (Mafia), The Resistance, Bohnanza
If you’ve never played these games before, we’re more than happy to show you how.
You’ll notice that after 5pm the latter half of this session overlaps with the “All Games” event. You’re welcome to stay on and continue to play lighter games or even try some more strategic games. ( In case you’re wondering, ruling is, Munchkin is strategy. )
